Rancho Palos Verdes:
Rancho Palos Verdes looks like a gerrymandered political district on a map. It stretches around the Palos Verdes Peninsula with weirdly shaped edges. However, this is explained when one understands that RPV was the last of the four cities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to form (it was incorporated in 1973). The city incorporated nearly all of the land not part of an existing city. The land incorporated included areas on the south side of the peninsula which are subject to land movement. The control of these areas and the development of some of them into housing and resorts has been one important issue facing this city. As Realtors love to point out, one development is now owned by Donald Trump. A few years later the City annexed an unincorporated area east of the city and west of San Pedro. This area, while technically a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, is allowed to have its students attend either Los Angeles or Palos Verdes schools. RPV’s population reached 41,145 in 2000.
